On March 23, 2010 a joint lobby effort is being organized to obtain legislator support for a temporary 1% increase in the general excise tax. This 1% increase is expected to cover nearly half of the projected state budget shortfall through 2011. This activity is being supported by the labor community and PHOCUSED that represents many social service non-profits.

PHOCUSED, an advocacy group for nonprofit organizations that assist the elderly, disabled, and children, is asking citizens to petition legislators to support a modest 1% increase in the GET. This effort is supported by many organizations including HGEA, UPW and UHPA along with the Interfaith Alliance, Lanakila Meals on Wheels and ILWU. These petitions will be delivered next week to the legislature.
There remain in the 2010 legislative session two areas of proposed legislation that will significantly improve faculty members’ health care and state revenue collections if passed by the legislature.

Sponsored by the non-profit community and labor this forum will present the views of Hawaii economists on adjusting taxes to meet the severe revenue problems of the state. Featured speakers include UH Manoa faculty, Dr. Gerard Russo and Dr. Byron Gangnes, as well as, Researcher William Boyd of UH West Oahu.
On Saturday, March 7th, the UHPA Board of Directors voted to endorse Congressman Neil Abercrombie for Governor of Hawaii. The Board’s decision came as a result of both an interview with the candidate and a membership survey indicating strong approval for Congressman Abercrombie among UHPA members.
Employees wishing to cancel the May 2010 bus pass must submit the cancellation form to the personnel representative by March 23, 2010. The deadline for employees wishing to cancel the June 2010 bus pass is April 22, 2010. Personnel representatives are able to enter the May cancellations and enrollments in the on-line processing system between March 1, 2010 and March 24, 2010. The June cancellations and enrollments may be entered beginning April 1, 2010 and ending April 23, 2010.

Restoration of general funds set aside for the UH continues to be an important message in these fiscally challenging times. There are many voices and interests vying for limited resources during this legislative session, and UHPA presents a strong case to make UH funding a top priority by showing the direct link between research conducted by UH faculty and the benefits to families and businesses statewide.
