UNITE HERE Local 5 is providing impetus to keep the legislature and public aware of the continuing attacks on unions and the poor funded by corporate interests. The message is to help ensure this does not happen in Hawaii.

All State employees are eligible to enroll each year in a flexible spending plan that allows the participants to pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses and the cost of dependent child care with “pre-taxed” dollars. The Senate Committee on Education's confirmation hearing on the Board of Regents Gubernatorial Nominees will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 1:15 p.m. in Room 225.
UHPA women members are invited to attend the 30th Annual Western Regional Summer Institute for Union Women at the Ala Moana Hotel from June 16-20, 2011. The UHPA Board of Directors has approved full funding for ten UHPA members on a first come, first serve basis.
Faculty are encouraged to attend the event honoring Martin Luther King and his fight for economic and social justice. Sponsored by Hawaii labor unions and many non-profit and religious groups, this event will send a strong message to legislators and the Governor that we stand together and promote what is right for our communities. We will advocate for the most vulnerable and those whose rights are being diminished by elected officials. This event is done in conjunction with groups in all 50 states.

At the initiation of Board of Regents’ Chair Howard Karr, an extensive and complete revision of the Board of Regents’ Policies (BORP) has been drafted and submitted for review and comment. The faculty senate chairs and administrators, as well as UHPA, were sent copies of the draft document. The proposals can be found at https://www.hawaii.edu/borpolicies/pdf/. UHPA has carefully reviewed the proposed changes and a response was sent to the BOR. Although the BOR and President Greenwood have characterized the changes as ministerial and “streamlining,” the draft contains a substantive shift in authority over major policy issues away from the Regents to the University President. This has been a policy effort begun by the prior two UH presidents in an effort to remove the Regents from “micro-managing” the institution. However, there are also contract implications in changing some of the policies and shifting others to Executive Policies that may not have yet been promulgated.
