Agreement Reached

The UHPA Board of Directors, Governor Ige, UH President David Lassner and the Board of Regents have reached a tentative agreement over the terms of a successor faculty contract effective July 1, 2017 following the expiration of the current contract on June 30, 2017.

We Recommend that you Vote In Favor

Your Board of Directors unanimously recommends this contract be approved. It is important to ensure faculty members are able to continue to provide the best education for our students and be assured your rights and compensation are protected for four years.

Highlights of the Tentative Agreement

Salary Increases for All Faculty Members

  • Y1: $500 plus 2.13% ATB (Added To Base)
    • (the $500 is divided into 24 payments and ATB)
  • Y2: $500 plus 2.82% ATB
    • (the $500 is divided into 24 payments and ATB)
  • Y3: 2% ATB plus reopener
  • Y4: 2% ATB plus reopener

Contract language highlights

  • Faculty rights and protections are stable for 4 years from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2021
  • In-rank promotions for I2 faculty
  • Letters of Hire are grievable and subject to arbitration
  • Tenure and Promotion process strengthened
  • Existing Intellectual Property language is retained

We appreciate all the questions brought forth regarding the Tentative Agreement, Mahalo! We’ve responded by updating the FAQ, adding to the slide deck and in addition have created a spreadsheet where you can plug in your salary and get details on how the agreement will benefit you.

Dear Gov Ige,

Every year we have the thought of moving off island for a better place for our children. This is because there aren’t enough role models and enough value put into education here in Hawaii. Help us make that decision to stay by putting your resources into education to promote STEM focus degrees. Also we struggle here at Kauai CC to recruit qualified math/science instructors. Please help us to be competitive!!!

I still remember your promise for STEM when you were on your campaign. I’m a STEM teacher affected in this bargaining year. Please keep your promoise.

Dear Governor Ige,

Nine years ago I returned home from a well-paying job to raise my son in Hawaii. Doing what I love and am passionate about my homeland is beyond words. But the fact that our cost of living is so high and our salary is not commensurate makes it difficult to stay. Please help us (all us HI raised folks) stay home and contribute to our community.

As a newish UH Faculty member, I am torn between staying in a job I love and helping students succeed, and moving to the mainland for a lower cost of living and better compensation. Many of us younger faculty are still paying off student loans. We want to buy homes and start families but we can’t do that if our wages don’t keep up with the cost of living. Who will help our students succeed if faculty continue to leave for better paying jobs??

As a new faculty at Kauai Comm. College I am fulfilling a life long dream to live and work here. Unfortunately, as a new faculty, I am not eligible for promotion for several years. The salary I receive may prohibit me staying long enough to get promoted. We already have issues with retention and recruitment due to salary. Please consider the above statement (“Hawaii residents with a UH degree earn more over their lifetime than those who don’t pursue higher education. Investing in the recruitment and retention of quality UH faculty is an investment in our students and Hawaii’s future.”) on higher education. We need good teachers! We need to keep the ones we have as well!

Dear Gov. Ige,

How am I supposed to teach my students to value an education when they see me, as well as their other professors, with our multiple degrees in higher ed, having great difficulty affording to raise our families? If we want 55 by ’25, we need to keep our faculty and not lose them to the mainland or to the private sector. Please support education by supporting UH faculty.
