I not only teach a 5(fall) / 4(spring) load, but I also serve on committees, participate in community events, and continue to pursue professional development opportunities. I work long hours and weekends, like my colleagues and likely earn minimum wage, but not much more. I am sad that my contributions aren't respected. What does this message say to my students? Dear Governor Ige, I am a Full Professor at Kauai CC. After working for the Univ. of Hawaii full-time for more than 15 years I still have difficulty making ends meet. I should also say I have a Ph.D. and am sure I could make a lot more money, particularly in terms of/relation to the cost of living, teaching elsewhere. My son is in his first year of college in Arizona. ""it's not Rocket Science""...yes, in Hawaii it's difficult to attract and retain highly qualified faculty to lead our state in exceptionally dynamic technological fields. So he goes to Arizona and will graduate in a few years with a degree in advanced technology. He probably won't come home. We need to support our faculty. We are families losing our children. B. Aloha Governor Ige, My students will suffer if I have to leave for the mainland to afford a proper life for my family.
