AFT Affiliation Provides Great Value for UHPA Members

Dues Begin on April 2024

Everyone is looking for ways to stretch their budgets and seeking the best value for their money. We know that faculty is no exception.

Now that UHPA is an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), you can expect a monthly $20.18 deduction each month, beginning in April.. That translates to a $10.09 deduction from each of your paychecks. This amount goes directly to AFT; UHPA does not receive any portion of this nor do we charge an administrative fee to AFT. UHPA will continue to operate within our existing budget—1% of your gross salary— so that your AFT deduction can add more value for all of our members. This deduction will begin with your paycheck on April 5, 2024.

What do you receive in return for $20 per month?
AFT represents 1.72 million members nationwide. UHPA is one of more than 3,000 local affiliates. With this vast membership, AFT negotiates great deals on products and services on behalf of its growing membership. However, AFT is not so large that it does not recognize the need to customize its benefits for the different affiliates such as UHPA, its first affiliate in Hawai‘i.  AFT offers the best of both worlds: Access to great benefits that are free or discounted and tailored benefits those in unique markets such as UHPA members. AFT is now working on customizing its benefits for Hawai‘i members. Watch for more information.

Best member benefit of all
One of the best member benefits coming your way is a salary increase in July 2024. The UHPA Collective Bargaining Committee negotiates the salary increase schedule on behalf of all faculty members.
Based on our current 2021-2025 UHPA-BOR contract, faculty will receive a 5% increase to your base salary effective July 1, 2024. This will be reflected in your paycheck on July 20, August 20 and September 20, depending on whether you are an 11-month or 9-month faculty member or a lecturer. If you are not a dues-paying UHPA member, but benefit from UHPA’s work, please consider becoming a member today and receive an array of benefits, including those from AFT.  Complete your membership  application today.
