Aloha UHPA Members,
As we observe King Kamehameha Day, we honor the enduring legacy of Hawai‘i’s monarchy – a government that served its people with integrity and unwavering values. This heritage stands in stark contrast to the burgeoning oligarchy we witness today, a stark departure from the constitutional fortitude we expect from our leaders.
On June 14th, in a move reminiscent of historical authoritarian spectacles, President Trump plans a self-congratulatory birthday and military parade. This is not just financially irresponsible; it is a brazen display of power akin to a dictator and undermines the very principles of equality and democracy upon which our nation was founded. Military parades are meant to mark the conclusion of major conflicts, not to celebrate personal aggrandizement.
We will not be silent. Hawai‘i, having experienced the oppressive shadow of colonization, understands the critical importance of resistance. The current administration seeks to erode access to education, precisely the tool needed to recognize and counter dangerous political regimes. This parade is a victory lap for those who attack our rights and take away our freedoms – from educators and public workers to immigrants and all who are being targeted.
Rise up on June 14. Let us stand together and protest President Trump’s self-serving parade. America is a democracy, run by the people, for the people. Do not allow this administration to further impede our sovereignty and silence our dissent. Your voice and your presence is crucial in the fight for a truly democratic future.
