There are many ways you can be a catalyst for positive change in our community. You can send in your ballot to make sure your vote counts. You can also make sure employees in all industries are being treated fairly. There are opportunities for all of us to get involved in making Hawai‘i a better place to live and work.
The hotel workers have said they cannot meet the expectations of visitors because of inadequate staffing, yet, hotel rates keep increasing and are at record-high levels. Unfortunately, this makes it hard for Hawai‘i to live up to its name as the Aloha State, and those planning their vacations are choosing other destinations. This will continue to weaken our local economy and make our recovery even more challenging. We would like to encourage you to support those trying to do the right thing for Hawai‘i and not cross their picket line. It is a way of honoring their voices and letting them know their voice counts. There is power in standing together in solidarity with other unions. If UH faculty ever needed the support of the community to ensure UH continues to be an economic engine for our state, the Hawai‘i hotel workers represented by UNITE HERE! Local 5 at eight major hotels in Waikiki and Kaua‘i where workers have authorized strikes will be right there to support us without hesitation. Your support will encourage the hotels to bargain in good faith with their employees so that they can reach an agreement and bring their open-ended strike to a close. It is everyone’s kuleana to look after the best, long-term interests of Hawai‘i, and to help ensure everyone in our islands can flourish and thrive. Let’s do our part.
