Finally a settlement regarding the 2016 dual holiday of Kuhio Day and Good Friday. Faculty members (11 month) who accumulate vacation shall be granted an additional day of vacation leave. All other faculty members who do not accumulate vacation( i.e. 9 month, 11 month, and faculty on “off-duty plan”) shall observe a second holiday that must be taken by December 31, 2016. There is a procedure for establishing a mutually agreed to day. Please review the Memorandum of Understanding for details.
The UH Manoa Faculty Senate has passed a resolution encouraging potential new faculty that they consult an attorney or UHPA before accepting a job offer. UH’s position that Letters of Hire may be unilaterally changed is of grave concern for all job applicants that may be interested in coming to any campus. The position taken by UH discourages the recruitment of new faculty.

Dean Hedges of JABSOM is proposing a new business plan for the Cancer Center with major changes being presented to the Board of Regents for discussion. Under this proposed approach all future faculty at the Cancer Center would have significantly different compensation guarantees and conditions of work then those presently employed. There have been administrative rule changes in two areas: Reinstatement After Termination for Non-Payment and Adult Disabled Children.
Department Chair Stuart Donachie demonstrates the impact of the loss of tenured faculty positions on instruction and research along with the dysfunction in facility planning for a new science building. Other departments experience similar circumstances. UHPA is experiencing an increase in grievances and complaints due to faculty members being impeded in their ability to advance student instruction and research. UHPA’s 42nd Year! It’s 2016 UHPA will reach 42 years as the exclusive representative of UH faculty members in 2016. It's a perfect year to prepare for significant challenges that were never contemplated when the collective bargaining adventure began. There’s a number of activities that will demand the most attention and effort from UHPA members, leaders and staff.
